Mental Health Training- Ligature Training- Ligature Awareness- Ligature Assessment Training

A Statement from our Director

At Tidal, we take great pride in delivering fit-for-purpose, original and pioneering courses. A perfect example of this is our suite of Suicide Awareness and Rescue from Ligature Risk Assessment training courses. This is original content devised and created by our specialist team at Tidal. We brought these combined courses to the market 5 years ago. Much has moved on since then particularly in respect to mental health and suicide awareness. That’s why it’s important to choose a training provider that genuinely knows, understands and delivers deep, meaningful and engaging training that genuinely adds value, raises knowledge and standards of awareness and understanding. All of our trainers teaching these courses are highly experienced professionals with recognised qualifications who complete ongoing CPD in these subjects.

As one of our clients said to me recently “Beware of cheap imitations. This is not the sort of training we can afford to get wrong”

Colin Frensham

Outline of the course:

We give learners more of an understanding regarding risk assessments, skills and knowledge to recognise ligature self-harm injuries and to safely remove someone from suspension using ligature cutters.  Learners will gain new skills and knowledge on how to recognise ligature injuries, treat a casualty and also to safely remove someone from suspended and unsuspected strangulation.

We always incorporate your policies and procedures to enable us to tailor the course to your specific requirements.

Why is ligature training and the use of ligature cutters important?

Having ligature awareness training and responding to incidents in a professional and timely fashion can and does save lives.  Hanging is the main method of suicide for mental health service users and this may involve suspending the body from a high ligature point.   This can cause a fracture to the upper spinal column, or through asphyxiation or strangulation without suspension of the body, using a ligature point at or below head height.

What is Ligature Training?

Ligature awareness training is specifically designed for support staff who are supporting children and young adults who are at risk of attempting suicide or self-harm by a number of means including the application of a ligature.

Learners will gain practical skills and knowledge to recognise self-harm and ligature injuries, treat a casualty and also to safely remove someone from suspension.

Tidal Training will incorporate your policies and procedures accordingly to enable us to tailor the course to your specific requirements.

Aims of the course:

Ligature training is delivered to up-skill and empowers staff to recognise and identify possible ligature points and to help them implement control measures in order to support an individual who is at risk from Ligature.

By the end of the course, attendees should have a better understanding of company policies, procedures and guidelines relating to ligatures.  Learners will also gain practical knowledge and skills to enable them to safely and securely rescue an individual who has ligatured using a range of Ligature Cutters.

Course Content

  • We will explore ligature risk assessments and discuss environmental risk assessments.
  • Review the organisation’s current policy, process and procedures on the use of the cutters.
  • Identify types of ligatures and ligature points.
  • Recognise and describe the signs and symptoms of ligature injuries.
  • Demonstrate the safe removal of ligatures using cutters.
  • Demonstrate safe removal from suspension and incomplete suspension.
  • Describe how to safely store, maintain, dispose and replace cutters.
  • Explore anti ligature devices
  • Explore ligature risk assessments and environmental risk assessments.
  • Discuss First Aid actions following strangulation or attempted strangulation.

Course Assessment and Certification

There will be continuous tutor assessment.  The tutor will assess learners on the correct use of various Ligature Cutting techniques.

Those students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Client Testimonial

I just wanted to let you know that your tutor came to deliver our training today.  It was excellent training.  He tailored it to our needs and the young person’s needs in particular.  The tutor facilitated the training in a way that generated discussion amongst our staff team, let it flow and input when required.

I have passed on my compliments in person but just thought I would let you know as well.

This is really excellent training that I will pass on to other agencies should they have a need as we do.
