Pain Management Training will help delegates to develop a deeper understanding of how pain affects individuals physically, psychologically, and socially. Learners will gain knowledge of pain assessment tools, the legal and ethical aspects of care, and strategies to manage pain safely and compassionately in a variety of settings. This course will also explore how multidisciplinary collaboration and effective care planning contribute to better outcomes for people experiencing pain.
Course Content
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the legal and ethical aspects of caring for people experiencing pain.
- Recognise the different types and classifications of pain — acute, chronic, nociceptive, and neuropathic.
- Explore the concept of “total pain” and its physical, emotional, social, and spiritual components.
- Learn the principles behind the Gate Control Theory and Cognitive-Behavioural Model of pain.
- Identify various pain assessment methods and how to select appropriate tools for individual needs.
- Apply evidence-based approaches to pain management using both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods.
- Understand the use and escalation of analgesia following the WHO Pain Ladder.
- Explore the safe use of opioids and address common misconceptions and fears.
- Recognise the importance of care planning and multidisciplinary teamwork in managing pain.
- Review relevant legislation, including the Mental Capacity Act, Human Rights Act, and Misuse of Drugs Act.
- Discuss the roles of key contributors such as nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, and therapists in pain management.
- Develop strategies for supporting individuals to achieve comfort, dignity, and improved wellbeing.
