Recommendation on Re-Training

It is recognised that the administration of Buccal Midazolam, Rectal Diazepam and Rectal Paraldehyde are emergency treatments which may or may not be used on a regular basis. The frequency which individuals use the procedure will have an effect on their level of skill and confidence.

It is recommended therefore that individuals attend a refresher course within 2 years.

This course is often booked with the following courses:

  • Safe Handling and Administration of Medication Level 1 & 2

1. Who is the training course for Epilepsy Awareness and Rescue Medication meant for?

Companies sign up their employees for this course. It is perfect for everyone who helps people with epilepsy, such as healthcare workers, education staff, support workers, and residential or domiciliary care teams who might need to give rescue medicine in an emergency.

2. What is the course about?

In the morning, there is a full theory session on epilepsy awareness that covers the causes, types of seizures, triggers, and how to deal with them. The afternoon session is all about giving rescue drugs (Buccal Midazolam, Rectal Diazepam, and Rectal Paraldehyde), legal and moral issues, side effects, emergency preparedness, and keeping people safe.

3. What are the main advantages of finishing this epilepsy training?

Delegates will learn the best ways to properly help people who are having seizures and provide them rescue medication. The course helps people feel more confident in how to respond to emergencies, follows national rules, and encourages care and safety that focusses on the person.

4. How are the course’s grades and certifications given?

Simulated practical tests are used to finish the assessment. A certificate that is good for two years will be given to students who finish the course. This certificate will show that they know how to give epilepsy rescue medication.

5. How often should staff get new training on how to give rescue medicine?

Rescue drugs like Buccal Midazolam, Rectal Diazepam, and Rectal Paraldehyde may not be given very often, so skills and confidence can wane over time. Staff should take a refresher course every two years to keep their skills sharp and safe.
