Pressure ulcers occur when a localised area of skin and underlying tissue becomes damaged due to continual pressure, friction, or shear.

  • Waterlow Pressure Area Risk Assessment Chart

The primary aim of this tool is to assist you to assess risk of a patient/client developing a pressure ulcer. We use this together with your clinical judgement.

The Waterlow consists of seven items: build/weight, height, visual assessment of the skin, sex/age, continence, mobility, and appetite, and special risk factors, divided into tissue malnutrition, neurological deficit, major surgery/trauma, and medication.

Course Assessment and Certification

Assessment will be by continuous assessment by the trainer – there is no ‘test’ paper.

A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of course and is valid for 2 years.
