Dysphagia Training

Dysphagia Training gives attendees better knowledge and understanding of dysphagia and common swallowing problems. It also helps to raise awareness of supporting patients/clients who have had strokes or have dementia and how to support staff to understand their role in caring for people who have developed this condition.

We discuss the common causes of swallowing difficulties and how to help reduce the risk of choking for patients/clients with Dysphagia.

Dysphagia Training Content:

• Causes of dysphagia and common swallowing problems
• The anatomy and physiology of swallowing
• How to recognise when someone is having difficulty swallowing
• Reducing risk of choking
• Knowing when to escalate and refer to a specialist
• Privacy, dignity and respect
• Alternatives to oral feeding
• Understanding IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative): food and fluid texture levels and safe preparation practices

Certification: On completion of the course delegates will be issued with a certificate of attendance valid for a period of 3 years.

1. Who should take this Dysphagia Awareness and IDDSI training course?

This dysphagia training course workshop is for support workers, carers, and other frontline staff who support people who have trouble swallowing. It is good for anyone who helps patients or clients with eating, drinking, and taking care of their nutrition.

2. What subjects are taught in the training?

The course goes on the most frequent causes of Dysphagia, how to tell when someone is having trouble swallowing, and useful tips for lowering the risk of choking. It also talks about the anatomy and physiology of swallowing, other ways to feed someone besides through their mouth, when and how to raise concerns, and how important it is to keep privacy, dignity, and respect.

3. What is IDDSI, and why is it relevant in places where people get care?

The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative is what IDDSI stands for. It gives a clear plan for making food and drinks with the right texture and consistency so that persons with dysphagia can eat and drink safely. To lower the risk of choking and aspiration and to encourage person-centred care, it is important to understand IDDSI.

4. Will the learners get a certificate for finishing the course?

Yes, everyone who attends the course will get a certificate of attendance. This is valid for three years and serves as evidence of training in Dysphagia awareness and IDDSI.

5. How would this training assist me do my job as a carer or support worker?

This training will teach you how to safely and successfully help those who have trouble swallowing. It helps you spot the signs of dysphagia, follow IDDSI’s advice for preparing food and drink, and take the right steps when necessary. All of these things make care safer and more respectful.
