Basic Clinical Observations Training

The goal of this Basic Clinical Observations training course is to equip carers and support staff to conduct baseline observations for their patients/clients. Staff are required to show evidence that they have completed training and their competency to take and record basic clinical observations. This is a procedure being carried out by carers both in nursing and residential homes as well as across community-based settings.

Why, when and how baseline observations are conducted, the normal range for each observation and how to record as well as action to be taken outside the range are also covered.

Course Content

• What are basic clinical observations and why do we need to do them?
• Understand the anatomy and physiology that relates to clinical observations.
• Learn about normal and abnormal baseline observations/vital signs.
• Understand the clinical significance of abnormal vital sign readings.
• Perform a range of clinical observations under supervision including:

1. Pulse
2. Blood pressure
3. Temperature
4. Respiratory rate
5. Oxygen saturations

• (AVPU) Consciousness assessment
• An introduction to the SBAR Tool

National Early Warning Score (NEWS2)

NEWS is a tool developed by the Royal College of Physicians which improves the detection and response to clinical deterioration in adult patients and is a key element of patient safety and improving patient outcomes.

Basic Clinical Observations Training Course Assessment and Certification

The assessment is completed with simulated practical assessments and on successful completion of the training learners will be issued with a certificate of attendance which is valid for 2 years.
