Course Description
This session covers safe, person-centred digital removal of faeces (DRF) and the administration of rectal suppositories. It focuses on assessment, consent and capacity, dignity, indications and contraindications, correct equipment and positioning, safe procedure, monitoring for complications, and accurate documentation.
To develop the knowledge and practical awareness needed to safely support individuals requiring digital removal of faeces and/or rectal suppositories.
Learning Aims
- Describe relevant lower bowel anatomy and bowel function.
- Identify when DRF and suppositories may be appropriate, unsafe, or need escalation.
- Apply consent, capacity, privacy, dignity and local-policy requirements.
- Prepare the patient, environment and equipment safely.
- Explain the correct procedure for DRF and rectal suppository administration.
- Recognise potential complications, including pain, bleeding and autonomic dysreflexia.
- Document care, outcomes and any concerns clearly.
