Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is brain damage caused by certain events after birth.  ABI can result in cognitive, physical, emotional or behavioural impairments that lead to permanent or temporary changes in functioning brain. These impairments may have resulted from either traumatic brain injury (e.g. physical trauma due to accidents, assaults, neurosurgery, head injury etc.) or nontraumatic injury (e.g. brain tumours, stroke, infection,  hypoxia, poisoning, ischemia, encephalopathy or substance abuse)

Course Assessment and Certification

Assessment will be by continuous assessment by the trainer – there is no ‘test’ paper.

A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of course and it is valid for 3 years.


1. Acquired brain injury (ABI) is targeted at?

Organisations that assist people with brain injuries are the target audience for this acquired brain injury training course. For employees in the medical, social care, rehabilitation, or support services sectors who require a better understanding of ABI and how to assist those impacted, it is perfect.

2. What is covered in the ABI training course?

Understanding how the brain works, what happens when an acquired brain injury occurs, the various types and causes of ABI, and its effects on emotions, cognition, and behaviour are all covered in detail in this course. Common terms used in ABI support are also introduced.

3. What are the main advantages of finishing this ABI course?

In order to identify various types of acquired brain injury, react appropriately to behaviours linked to ABI, and confidently use pertinent terminology, delegates will acquire a deeper understanding of brain function and injury. No written exam is required. The trainer continuously evaluates the delegates during the acquired brain injury training session. Successful participants will receive a certificate of completion that is good for three years.
