Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is brain damage caused by certain events after birth. ABI can result in cognitive, physical, emotional or behavioural impairments that lead to permanent or temporary changes in functioning brain. These impairments may have resulted from either traumatic brain injury (e.g. physical trauma due to accidents, assaults, neurosurgery, head injury etc.) or nontraumatic injury (e.g. brain tumours, stroke, infection, hypoxia, poisoning, ischemia, encephalopathy or substance abuse)
Acquired Brain Injuries challenge an individual’s quality of life, independence and dignity. Those who have a brain injury have to learn to live life as fully as possible, often needing them to relearn previously acquired cognitive skills. This Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) course will provide all health care workers with a broad understanding of brain injuries in order to support individuals with a brain injury.
